1930s Feedsack Dress and/or Apron for 18 Inch dolls such as American Girl®

1930s style dress and/or apron
Handcrafted for 18-inch dolls such as American Girl®

2017 Limited Edition Set

We are pleased to announce Lemon Bay Doll’s first limited edition frock in our newly launched clothing line which will offer high quality, meticulously crafted garments to accompany our doll accessories. This grouping, which will be produced in a small-numbered edition, features a beautiful 1930s-inspired feed sack dress and pocketed apron. These items are available separately or as a set. Please make your selection from the menu above.

The apron is made of the same blue and yellow floral cotton print seen on the feed sack in our chicken keeping accessories (https://www.etsy.com/listing/255955868/doll-chicken-keeping-accessories?ref=shop_home_active_19) and features deep pockets across the front for holding necessities. It is fully lined and closes in the back with a single blue button. The collared dress is made of a coordinating, high-quality 100%-cotton print with tiny white flowers on a sunny yellow field. It falls below the knee which is historically accurate for this era. The same material used for the apron adds contrast at the neck and side plackets, sleeve bands, and pocket edging of this dress. Tiny white buttons and top stitching add detailed finishing. The dress features a completely lined bodice and closes in the back with Velcro.

The humble feed sack dress has a delightful history which brags of American ingenuity and creativity. The Great Depression of the 1920s-30s brought lean times for most, and abysmal impoverishment to many unfortunate American families. A frugal, “nothing wasted” approach necessarily permeated every aspect of life. Thrifty farmwomen were the first to recognize that the cotton sacks containing chicken feed could be repurposed to provide much needed fabric for clothing. These feed sacks were originally made of undyed cotton. As manufacturers saw how the sacks were being used, they began producing them in brightly colored fabrics and printed designs. They hoped to compete for business by offering appealing fabric choices to their customers. As the idea spread, ladies’ magazines started publishing patterns for dresses as well as other household goods such as curtains, quilts and kitchen towels using feed sacks.! WWII brought fabric shortages as cotton was in great need for our soldiers overseas. Feed sack dresses quickly entered mainstream fashion as the well-off and poor alike recycled feed sacks to do their part for the war effort. Printed feed sacks continued late into the 1950s and gave rise to fashion and design contests sponsored by the National Cotton Council and the Textile Bag Manufacturers Association. Let the history and creative American resourcefulness that inspired the feed sack dress and apron enrich your collection with this first limited edition offering in the new Lemon Bay Doll clothing line.

Doll and accessories are not included in this listing. The spectator style shoes Kit wears in this listing were a custom order from A Bee Line. Please visit this delightful shop here on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ABeeLine.

The 1930s inspired dress and the apron featured in this listing have been created from patterns found at Pixie Faire™ https://www.etsy.com/shop/PixieFairePatterns. The dress was made from a Heritage Doll Fashions™ pattern and the apron is a variation of an Eden Ava Couture pattern.

We are not associated with American Girl® in any way other than being huge fans, collectors and builders of many items that help doll play flourish in our home and hopefully yours as well!

The love of adventure is one of the trademarks of our family. The other is erring on the side of caution. When we create toys for our children's imaginative play, we seek to impart skills that they will someday apply in life. We try to share our love of adventure and provide a vehicle with which we can teach them how to enjoy the adventure safely. We hope our toys offer this same possibility to you and your family.

Time passes so very quickly. Enjoy the adventure.
